Swimming with skin conditions, allergies or asthma

Sensitive Skin, Allergies and Asthma are all common complaints for swimmers…What is the answer?

With one in every three children throughout Australia suffering either asthma or some kind of sensitive skin condition, it is no wonder this is a very common question from consumers when they are considering a swimming pool. We take calls all the time regarding eczema, psoriasis, skin rashes, itchy skin and dermatitis to name a few.

The truth is, there are alternatives to traditional chlorine systems available on the market today and gaining wide acceptance. This is extremely promising news for those families that have fought for years, with the heartache of their kids having skin reactions/allergies every time they go for a swim. I know for a fact that there are plenty of families around the country and the world for that matter, where this is completely normal, however, your time has come and the future healthy alternative for swimming pools is here.

For the last decade or so the demand for alternative systems and the reduction in chlorine in swimming pools has become extremely popular. Chlorine has been the traditional method to sanitise water and has been used since the early 1900’s.  Although chlorine has been deemed sufficient to sanitise both domestic and commercial swimming pools, swimmers are susceptible to all kinds of skin reactions and respiratory allergies.

Chlorine reactions may include itchy, red skin or hives (itchy bumps). This is not an allergy but is actually "irritant dermatitis" (like a chemical burn), caused by hypersensitivity to this natural irritant. Chlorine is also drying to the skin and can irritate existing dermatitis.

Chlorine may indirectly contribute to allergies by irritating and sensitising the respiratory tract. Research has suggested that frequent swimming in chlorinated pools and exposure to cleaning products containing chlorine may increase the risk of developing asthma and other respiratory allergies, both in adolescents and in adults. According to the Australasian Society of Clinical Immunology and Allergy incorporated, swimming in chlorinated swimming pools is one of many known triggers for atopic dermatitis, more commonly known as eczema.

Swimmers are also deterred from chlorinated pools simply from the foul odour and taste of the water. It also extremely common to hear that bathers and towels detteriate far quicker in a chlorine based pool, as well as the pool equipment itself. Additionally chlorine dissipates quickly, which in turn has a direct effect on the water balance of the pool and the costs associated to rebalance. Other harmful chemicals are needed to hold the chlorine for longer periods of time (cyunaric acid), which is commonly sold off the shelves of pools shops as “sunblock” or “sunscreen”.

A massive impact on the industry in more recent times with the likes of Magnapool has been the introduction of mineral salts opposed to direct salt. The thought process here was the minerals most commonly (magnesium and potassium) are absorbed through the skin and this transdermal method, can have powerful effects in assisting the body to build and maintain optimal levels of magnesium. This in turn is claimed to promote health and wellbeing, relieve stress and anxiety and provide your muscles with added strength. However, the fact remains that these minerals are still Salt which in turn is producing chlorine.
